Every Tuesday I take my crossword to the little coffee place near the house. I wear jeans and a plain tee, because it is Tuesday and I am 68 and that is the uniform. Half of Newport is in it.

 

Last Tuesday I had barely sat down when the woman at the next table put down her phone, looked at me, and said the thing I have been thinking about all week.

Okay. Tell me about the jacket.

Not hello. Not excuse me. Tell me about the jacket. By the time my refill came, two more women had asked, and one of them photographed the sleeve. For a woman doing a crossword in jeans, it was a lot of attention, and I will be honest, I did not hate it.

How it happens

Here is what happens to getting dressed somewhere in your fifties. You find the uniform. Jeans, a tee, comfortable shoes, done. It is easy, it is sensible, and it is invisible.

 

And most of what the stores offer to fix it is worse than the problem. Loud prints that wear you. Stiff jackets that feel like a job interview. So you stay in the uniform, and the uniform stays invisible, and years go by.

 

I had made my peace with invisible. Or I thought I had, until three strangers interrupted a crossword.

What I had wrong 

Here is the bit I got most wrong. I thought the choice was between invisible and trying too hard.

 

The third option is one piece that does all the talking, worn over the uniform you already love. This jacket is ivory with big black ink strokes swept across it, circles and dashes like Japanese calligraphy, and little flashes of gold running alongside the black. It is not a pattern. My husband, who has not commented on clothing since the Clinton years, asked if it was new. It was not, by then. That is the kind of jacket this is.

Three things I have learned since

One. It promotes everything under it. Jeans and a tee become an outfit. A black dress becomes an event. It is the same trick every time, and it has not failed yet.

 

Two. Asymmetric beats symmetric. Because the strokes are placed and uneven, it reads like art rather than fabric. People assume it cost four times what it did.

 

Three. It holds its shape. Light on, structured to look at, uncrushed by a day of errands and one enthusiastic grandchild hug. It comes off the chair looking like it went on in the morning.
