A Letter From a Reader

I have been stopped three times this month because of a coat

A patchwork of color on the outside, soft fleece on the inside, and a hood for the mornings that bite — without the weight of a winter coat.

The Cassandra. I have not left the house in anything else since it arrived.

I am 68, and my coats had become purely functional. A navy one for nicer days, a beige one for everything else, and a heavy black thing I dread putting on because it sits on my shoulders like a suit of armor by the time I have walked to the car. Warm, yes. But nothing I ever looked forward to reaching for.

I had started to feel a little invisible in my own clothes.

It was my sister who told me a coat is the only thing people actually see all winter, and that mine were doing me no favors. Then she sent me a link one evening with three words: just read it.

Brooks & Bennett Newport had made exactly the sort of coat I didn't know I was looking for. The coat is called the Cassandra, and their letter walks through the handful of things they refused to compromise on. I am going to let their words carry it, because they say it better than I could.

The print people stop you about

The Cassandra started as artwork: triangles and squares in coral, teal, magenta, gold and deep red, pieced across a cream ground like a quilt somebody spent a winter on. It is the reason women stop you in the parking lot. We have lost count of the letters that begin with someone asking where it came from.

"Three compliments in one trip to the market. At 68, I had forgotten what that felt like."

Diane M., Greenville SC

Lined inside, without the weight of a winter coat

The whole inside is lined with a soft brushed fleece, collar to hem and all the way down the sleeves, behind a textured woven face that holds the print clean and bright. That is where the warmth comes from — not from thickness. So it holds the heat like a proper coat while it still sits light on your shoulders, and you can wear it all afternoon without feeling worn out by it.

"Warm as my old parka and half the burden on my shoulders. That is the whole reason I keep reaching for it."

Janet S., Bluffton SC

A cozy hood, for the mornings that bite

We lined the hood in the same soft fleece and left it roomy, with a drawstring so you can pull it close when the wind turns. Up, it keeps the chill off your ears and the back of your neck. Down, it sits like a soft collar. It is the difference between walking the dog and staying inside.

"I pull the hood up walking to the mailbox and my ears stay warm. No hat, no scarf, no fuss."

Carol R., Charleston SC

And yes — it has pockets. Real ones.

Two proper pockets, set into the front at hip height, deep enough for your phone, your keys and a pair of gloves at the same time. Not the shallow slits that hold nothing and gape when you use them. You can walk to the mailbox with your hands warm and your things on you, and leave the purse at home.

"Deep pockets that actually hold my phone and my keys. Whoever decided that deserves a raise."

Patricia L., Columbia SC

It fits the body you have

We make the Cassandra from a size S all the way to 5XL, and every size is cut on the same relaxed lines — the larger ones are not simply stretched out, and the patchwork is scaled so it stays in proportion. It comes in two colorways. Order the size you usually wear, or one up if you like to layer a thick sweater underneath.

Mine arrived on a Tuesday, carefully folded and ready to wear. I put it on in the bedroom and wore it out to the mailbox in the same hour.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years disappearing into a beige coat — and this one quietly gave me back the pleasure of getting dressed to go out. If that sounds like you, I hope you find your size before it clears.
