A Letter From a Reader

The one dress I throw on and instantly feel put-together.

On the little ivory dress that gives me room through the middle, covers my arms, and somehow makes getting dressed feel special again.

Photographed at home..

I am 68 years old, and somewhere along the way I stopped buying dresses that felt special. Everything comfortable seemed plain and forgettable; everything beautiful was fitted, sleeveless, or felt as though it belonged on somebody twenty years younger. So whenever we had somewhere nice to go, I reached for the same safe things.

I hadn't realized how much I missed putting on a dress and immediately feeling lovely in it.

Then I came across the Rosalie from Brooks & Bennett Newport. At first it was those wonderful flowers around the cuffs that made me stop. Then I noticed the little flower buttons running down the front, the softly textured ivory fabric, and that wonderfully uncomplicated shape.

The dress is called the Rosalie, and what surprised me was how practical it felt underneath all those beautiful details. The easy shape, covered arms, comfortable sleeves and little flowers were exactly the things I didn't know I'd been looking for. I'm going to walk you through them, because they're what finally convinced me.

A shape that gives you room to breathe

The Rosalie falls in one clean, easy line instead of pulling tightly around the waist or middle. There is enough room to move comfortably, but the beautiful shape keeps it from feeling shapeless. It simply falls away from the body and lets the details do the talking.

“It doesn't grab me around the middle at all. I put it on and immediately felt comfortable and dressed up at the same time.”

Diane M., Greenville SC

Title

A beautiful texture that doesn't need fussing over

The soft ivory fabric has a lovely woven texture that gives the Rosalie character without needing a busy print. From across the room it looks beautifully simple. Up close, you notice all those tiny details that make it feel far more special.

“The fabric is what surprised me. It has such a pretty texture that the dress doesn't need anything else.”

Janet S., Bluffton SC

And those little flower buttons

Running all the way down the front is a row of small ivory flower buttons. They're subtle enough to keep the dress elegant, but unusual enough that people notice them when they come closer. It's one of those little details that makes the Rosalie feel anything but ordinary.

“The little flower buttons are beautiful. My sister noticed them almost immediately and asked where I'd found it.”

Carol R., Charleston SC

Title

Sleeves that cover the arms beautifully

The softly gathered sleeves give you comfortable coverage through the upper arms without hiding you underneath heavy fabric. And then there are those extraordinary flower cuffs, which turn something practical into the prettiest part of the entire dress.

“I love having my arms covered without feeling frumpy. Those flowers at the cuffs make the whole dress.”

Patricia L., Columbia SC

The flowers get noticed — for the right reasons

The Rosalie doesn't need a loud print to get attention. The oversized ivory flowers around each cuff give an otherwise simple dress one wonderfully unexpected detail. Pretty, feminine and a little playful, without making you feel as though you're trying too hard.

Why they're clearing it now

They priced The Rosalie at $202.95 when it launched, and it sold at that price all season. But for the Brooks & Bennett Newport Clearance Sale, we wanted to give something back to the women who have supported us since 2001, so the remaining Rosalie dresses are now $69.95, well under a third of the original price.

Mine arrived folded in tissue with a little handwritten note on top. I put it on in the bedroom with the simplest pair of shoes I own and felt wonderful. I didn't add a necklace or a scarf. The flowers did all the work.

I do not usually write things like this. But I spent too many years assuming that comfortable dresses had to be plain, and beautiful dresses were no longer made with women like me in mind. The Rosalie reminded me that neither was true. If you've been waiting for something that feels easy and a little special at the same time, I hope you find yours before it clears.
